There’s More to Tapping Than Dance
March 2009
"All that we are is a result of our thoughts."
Tough to argue the point. You could almost call it a theme in the life of Donna Burick. So much so, it’s posted on the wall of her therapy room.
Burick’s business, Body Talk, is symbolic of her life up to this point. It’s about high energy, not holding back and living in the moment. As you speak to her, you definitely get the sense that if she feels the need for change, she will. It’s just that simple.
Burick, who turns 50 this year, hails from Wilmington (the one in Delaware.) Her family is what now might be called relatively conventional for this day and age, except that she lost her mother unexpectedly and tragically early in life. There’s a step dad, not so uncommon, brothers and sisters, some related by blood, some not.
A traditional public school education labeled her as learning disabled, yet her level of achievement since those days might indicate otherwise.
After high school, she basically talked her way into Guilford College, where she majored in Social Work.
The realities of the real world of social work didn’t quite match up to the dream and off she went. Without a real plan, she turned to something she knew about, food. Her dad was a restaurateur, and she had a knack for creative recipes along with an innate sense of what people liked.
She opened "A pinch of Thyme" in 1981, and is the first to admit she did pretty well when she sold the business in 94.
One of the things she discovered about herself was her sensitivity to other people. She knows what foods they would like, and rather than have set menus, would create each party based on that particular customer.
She never left the staff in charge. She was always on hand to make things perfect.
While doing all this, she also became the mother of two boys, 15 and 11, and went through some pretty dramatic personal changes. Her marriage of 24 years ended, and her new career began with her training with Body Talk.
Donna is actually one of many therapists in the region. As she would attest, the therapy isn’t necessarily for everyone, but it’s remarkably simple and effective. It has actually been around for more than 4000 years. Very generally speaking, all the parts of your body, while different, work together. A Body Talk therapist, through various means, help them communicate better. Like all good organizations, the various parts have to communicate to get the best results. It you want to know more, I recommend you visit the website for the whole story. www.bodytalksystem.com.
Donna said that early challenge in her elementary years became a blessing. "It probably made me work harder and become more determined." It also had the effect of decreasing the importance of labels.
She makes people feel better, and you can definitely tell that’s what it’s all about. Like all of us, we need to make a living, feed the family, pay the mortgage, but when you can do it while making the best use of your talents and energy, so much the better.
And energy is something Donna is loaded with. Frankly, it’s what she’s all about. She’s an energy therapist and a life coach, and I can tell you first hand, she is one of the more comfortable people you’ll ever be around. From the time you meet Donna, you will be at ease. I’m no expert, but I’d have to say that would be a priority with any therapist, don’t you think?
